Heritage in Schools
For the past number of years we have been delighted to have Melanie Lorien visit our school as part of the Heritage in Schools Scheme. This scheme provides a panel of Heritage Specialists who visit schools.
It supports the aims and objectives of the Social, Scientific and Environmental Education (SESE) curriculum. Through the Scheme, the children can also develop a knowledge and appreciation for the uniqueness of their locality through trips to local parks, woods, lakes, rivers, sea-shores, old graveyards, castles or churches or other places of interest through structured field trips with a Heritage Expert.
The visit is part-funded by both the school and the Heritage Council.
Melanie is an organic gardener and a former Woodland Conservation Ranger.
During her visits to school we have done some work in our pond and some tree labelling. We also use our polytunnel and sow some seeds and make seed bombs and take cuttings. In the warmer months we have done a butterfly survey and worked with straw. During the Autumn months we look at the compost bin and discuss what makes good compost, search for mini-beasts and plant some Spring bulbs around the school.
Melanie is a craft-maker who works with straw, she is particularly interested in the traditions and folklore associated with the harvest. She also focuses on St. Brigid’s Day, Straw Boys, Wren Boys and Mummers.
On a school visit, Melanie brings these customs and traditions to life for the children they learn how to make straw items such as crosses and harvest knots and get the opportunity to wear Straw Boy costumes. Melanie also has a large collection of unusual straw items from around the world which she shares with the children bringing the stories of other cultures directly into the classroom.
Melanie is a member of the International Guild of Straw Craftsman and their representative in Ireland. She regularly demonstrates at The National Museum of Country Life and other heritage events around the country.
